“Stories, Structures and Stewards: Iron and American Industrialization at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site” will be the featured Lecture Series program sponsored by The Friends of Cornwall Iron Furnace on Tuesday, May 8. This presentation is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Freeman Hall auditorium on the campus of Cornwall Manor Retirement Community, across the street from the Iron Furnace. Guest Lecturer is David Blackburn, site manager at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Elverson, PA., a position which he has held since November of 2015. Hopewell is one of a small number of National Park Service facilities that preserve buildings and sites which tell the story of industrialization in the U.S. Blackburn will share highlights of the story of Hopewell Furnace—its founding by Mark Bird in 1771, its people, its stories and its creation as a National Park in 1938. Blackburn has worked in 13 National Park units in his 30-year career, including Mesa Verde National Park where he served as a ranger, Rosie the Riveter/World War II Homefront National Historic Park as chief of interpretation and Lowell National Historic Park as chief of cultural resources. A native Californian, David grew up in the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay areas. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from the University of Arizona and a Master of Arts in Cultural Resource Management from Sonoma State University. He resides in Exton, PA. The lecture is open to the public in a handicap-accessible facility. A freewill offering will be taken.
