The lecture series sponsored by The Friends of Cornwall Iron Furnace offers the first presentation of 2018 on Tuesday, March 13.
“The Spanish American War and Lebanon County” will be presented by James McAteer at 7:00 p.m. in the Freeman Hall Auditorium on the campus of Cornwall Manor Retirement Community.
McAteer, past national president of Sons of Spanish American War Veterans, will bring his expertise to the program as he delves into causes, major war events and Lebanon County’s contribution to the war. McAteer notes that most people do not know that all Pennsylvania National Guards from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh reported to Mt. Gretna for training. He has an Excel program with veteran information on over 370 Lebanon County veterans of the war which he will show during the presentation.
McAteer, a native of Brooklyn, New York, was educated in Pennsylvania, receiving a B.A. in history, an M.S. in public administration and an M.S. in counseling, all from Shippensburg University.
He is the past president of the Lebanon Alexander Quinn Camp, SSAWV, founder and immediate past president of the Lebanon Valley Genealogical Society, former director and member of Friends of Light’s Fort, first vice commander in Lebanon of the Seven Shays Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, member of the Berks/Lebanon Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and past commander of the Annville American Legion.
The program is open to the public in a handicap-accessible facility. A freewill offering will be taken during the evening.
